A Portrait of a Young Girl

Original condition
This fine early portrait by Pieter Hermansz. Verelst, signed and
dated 1642, is still very much in the style of his teacher Jacob
Gerritsz Cuyp. The refinement, however, also shows the influence of
Gerard Dou, his other - supposed - teacher. The minute brushwork in the
lace, for example, and the light on the gold-trimmed bows, clearly
recalls the technique of this Leiden fijnschilder.
